I felt like I needed to get back to the sketchbook, so I did this tonight while I ate at village pizza. Guess what?, I ate pizza. So, I have been a complete failure when it comes to my sketchbook lately. I've been drawing in these sketchbooks that have traditional book bindings and clothey cardboard covers for the past 6 or so years. I don't know anybody but me who likes this style of sketchbook. So I bought some different ones. A moleskin and one with a spiral binder. Well, I wasn't the best drawer before and then I turned into a four year old with all thumbs. I've talked enough about this and hopefully my sketching will improve. I feel fine about this drawing but more importantly it came pretty easily so this might be the end of my drawing slump.

  1. I LOVE IT! I am sending you tons of drawing energy.

I like this kind of spiral bound sketch book, big though. I like that I can tear pages out (with a bit of struggle) and scan. I could even put them back if I want. What I don't like is sometimes it gets all discombobulated and pages slip out of the spiral. I love to carry small moleskins around though especially the medium sized new ones with soft cover.

  2. D,

Your putting too much pressure on your sketchbooks. Doug Chayka from the Academy had a great post about them. I've since bought the soft back, larger moleskin. It's thinner, and feels more temporary, so I'm feeling less pressure (cheaper too.)

  3. Thanks guys.
I've been trying to relax as an artist in general. For years I've trying to be as good as someone else or do a painting like someone else, and I'm never going to reach my full potential that way.
And next time I'm at the art store I'll get one of the larger moleskins

Julia- I love being able to tear crappy drawing out of spiral bound sketchbook. I feel guilty for doing it though. Its like I'm cheating.
